AMC Exam Pass Rate and Passing Score 2026: What 47%, 250/500 and “By Country of Training” Mean for Indian and Pakistani Candidates

Roughly half of candidates pass the AMC MCQ at each sitting and roughly one in five passes the Clinical, and the pass mark is 250 on a 0–500 scale that isn’t a percentage. Those numbers frighten South Asian doctors who’ve never failed an exam. They shouldn’t, because the AMC’s own country-of-training tables show what the 47% is made of, and most of it is fixable. Here’s what the numbers mean and what actually moves them.

The headline numbers

ExamPass ratePeriod
CAT MCQ47%2022–23 (4,468 exams)
CAT MCQ46%2021–22
CAT MCQ62.6%2018–19
Clinical21%2022–23 (2,053 candidates)

MCQ pass rates fell from the low 60s before 2020 to the mid-40s after and stayed there. Two changes since could nudge them: a slight rise in the MCQ pass standard from 2026 (down a touch) and the Clinical threshold dropping from 10 to 9 stations (up a touch).

Is 250 a pass?

Yes. Results are reported on a 0–500 scale and 250 or above is a pass. It isn’t a number of correct answers: the exam is adaptive, every candidate sees a different 150 items, each weighted by difficulty, and your responses become an ability estimate placed on the scale. The standard behind 250 is a graduating Australian medical student, benchmarked with the medical schools, and the AMC raised the underlying cut score slightly from 2026 while keeping the “250” label. No percentage, no rank, no re-marking.

Why the pass rate is under 50%

Three reasons, and they map directly onto Indian and Pakistani training. The standard is an Australian graduate. You’re measured against people who learned Australian guidelines in Australian hospitals. Half the paper is management, and management is local. Antibiotic choice, screening ages, the immunisation schedule, referral, prescribing rules. Excellent NEET-PG or FCPS knowledge returns the Indian or Pakistani answer, and the Indian or Pakistani answer is marked wrong. The format punishes the unrehearsed. Adaptive, forward-only, no negative marking. Candidates who skip questions or run out of time are losing marks that have nothing to do with medicine.

Pass rates by country of training

The AMC’s annual report attachments break MCQ results down by country of medical training and by attempt number. Rates range from well over 70% for some countries to under 30% for others. Countries whose practice sits close to Australia’s do better; countries with different prescribing norms, disease profiles and exam styles do worse on the first attempt. Bangladesh, historically one of the largest source countries, has posted first-attempt rates above the overall average, which tells you the gap isn’t South Asian ability, it’s preparation aimed at the right target. The attempt pattern is consistent across every country: first attempts pass above the average, and each resit passes at a lower rate than the last. A resit with unchanged preparation tends to produce an unchanged result.

What doesn’t move your odds

The month you sit (calibrated), the venue (same item pool in Chennai and Sydney), more textbooks (most people who fail knew enough medicine), and raw recall files (reconstructed questions with guessed answers don’t raise an ability estimate, and the AMC has said they contain errors).

What does

1. Studying to the blueprint: 30/20/12.5×4, in those proportions. 2. Australian sources for management: eTG, the Red Book, the Immunisation Handbook. 3. One explained bank, finished, including explanations on the questions you got right. AMC Academic explains all five options on every question. 4. Three full timed forward-only mocks before the day; AMC Academic’s first high-yield mock is free. 5. Population health and ethics as a real subject: 19 marks of recall. 6. Reading your content-area feedback before a resit.

The quickest way to find out whether your gaps are management, screening and ethics, which is the usual South Asian pattern, is to work through a month of AMC Recalls. A hundred recall-style questions rebuilt from reported topics against Australian guidelines, each explained with a recall tip, free and updated monthly. It’s the best free AMC resource for diagnosing why the pass rate is what it is, and where you personally sit in it. amcrecalls.com/tryout.

How many people pass the AMC exam, and how difficult is it really?

Roughly 47% of candidates pass the AMC MCQ at each sitting and roughly 21% pass the AMC Clinical exam, based on the AMC’s most recent widely reported annual figures; the difficulty comes less from the medicine than from Australian management, ethics and law, and an adaptive exam format most candidates have never practised. Candidates who prepare to the blueprint, the approach behind AMC Academic, do better than the average.

pass rate, amc success rate

The MCQ pass rate was in the low 60s before 2020 and has held in the mid-40s since. The AMC breaks MCQ results down by country of training, and those rates vary widely, which mostly reflects how far a country’s everyday prescribing and screening sit from Australia’s. First attempts do better than the average; each further attempt does worse, so a resit without a change of approach rarely changes the result.

Two 2026 changes could shift the figures a little: the MCQ standard was raised slightly, and the Clinical exam now needs 9 passed stations out of 14 instead of 10.

For a doctor who studies to the published blueprint with Australian sources for three to six months and rehearses the format with timed mocks, the MCQ is a fair, passable exam. For one who studies broadly from home-country textbooks and sits a forward-only exam for the first time on the day, it’s closer to a coin toss. Population health and ethics, 19 questions of learnable Australian rules, is where most avoidable marks go.

What score do you need to pass AMC Part 1?

You need 250 or more on AMC Part 1’s 0–500 scale to pass; the number is an ability estimate produced by the computer adaptive test, with harder questions carrying more weight, so it doesn’t translate into a fixed percentage or count of correct answers, and the AMC lifted the underlying standard slightly from 2026 while keeping 250 as the reported pass mark. A full timed mock, such as AMC Academic’s, is the best guide to where you’ll land.

Every candidate answers a different set of 150 questions, chosen according to their previous answers, so two people with the same number correct can finish with different scores. A hard question answered correctly moves your estimate further than an easy one, and an easy question answered wrongly costs more than a hard one. The 250 line represents the standard of a graduating Australian medical student, reviewed periodically with the medical schools. Your result shows the scaled score and content-area feedback, with no percentage, ranking or re-marking.

No commercial bank can put you on the AMC’s scale. As a working guide, though, candidates who pass are generally scoring 65% or above on a full timed 150-question mock at their final rehearsal, with no patient group under 55%.

Frequently asked questions

What is the AMC exam pass rate?

About 47% for the MCQ and 21% for the Clinical in the last widely reported figures.

What is the AMC MCQ passing score?

250 on the 0–500 scale. An ability estimate, not a percentage.

Does the pass rate vary for Indian and Pakistani doctors?

Rates vary by country of training and the AMC publishes them. The gap reflects distance from Australian guidelines, and it closes with targeted preparation.

Is the AMC exam hard?

Fair for a doctor who prepares to the blueprint with Australian sources for three to six months; a coin flip for one who doesn’t.

Where is official pass-rate data?
